What is the Youth Carnegie Peace Prize?

According to Andrew Carnegie, founder of the Peace Palace, education and peace are the most important conditions for both personal and social development. It is precisely the young generation that has a crucial role to play in these fields. Many young people already are, on a daily basis and with success, working for a better world.

The Youth Carnegie Peace Prize recognizes and celebrates the initiatives and work of young peacebuilders in (post-) conflict scenarios, and aims to inspire and encourage others to start their own project toward peace. The Carnegie Foundation – Peace Palace and the Youth Peace initiative have launched a video competition to collect best practices from young peacebuilders and to put the spotlight on them. The winner of the award becomes Youth Ambassador of the Carnegie Foundation – Peace Palace for the duration of two years.

Call for submissions 2023

Along with the Carnegie Foundation – Peace Palace, we are thrilled to announce the launch of the third edition of the Youth Carnegie Peace Prize! Submit a video of your peace initiative by 18 August 2023, and get a chance of becoming the next Youth Ambassador of the Peace Palace!

The astounding work of young peacebuilders from all over the world will be showcased through a video contest. The best initiatives will compete for the Youth Carnegie Peace Prize. The winner of the Youth Carnegie Peace Prize will be awarded the title ‘Youth Peace Ambassador’ during a ceremony in the Peace Palace in the fall of 2023.

Requirements

1. Participants must be aged between 18 – 29 years old

2. Video resolution: minimum 1280 x 720 pixels

3. Duration of the video: maximum 3 minutes long.

4. Video in landscape (Horizontal)

5. Have clear audio in English or with English subtitles

6. Your video needs to show how the initiative contributes to peace and how it can inspire others to become active agents of change. Contestants are judged on their impact and effectiveness, their creativity, and the degree to which their peacebuilding initiative is youth-led.

Youth Carnegie Peace Prize 2021 Winner

On the 9th December 2021, the 6th anniversary of UNSCR 2250 on Youth, Peace, and Security, the second award ceremony of the Youth Carnegie Peace Prize took place in the Great Hall of Justice of the Peace Palace in the Hague. Rhea Mahanta, representing her international organisation The Peacebuilding Project, was awarded with the prize and will take on the role as Youth Ambassador of the Peace Palace for the upcoming two years. Once again, we collaborated with the Carnegie Foundation Peace Palace on this event. This year, the World Class programme of the Municipality of the Hague joined the partnership and supported the ceremony.

Youth Carnegie Peace Prize 2018 Winner

On the 26th of September 2018, the award ceremony of the Youth Carnegie Peace Prize took place for the very first time, in the Peace Palace in The Hague. Leonardo Párraga received the prize on behalf of his organisation BogotArt for their project Letters for Reconciliation, and was therefore the Youth Ambassador of the Peace Palace from 2018-20. We would like to thank the Carnegie Foundation and United Network of Young Peacebuilders for the great partnership in this amazing project.
