The 8th Arab-European Youth Forum, jointly organised by the Council of Europe and the League of Arab States, took place from October 14-19, 2024, in the historic city of Luxor, Egypt. This year, the Forum focused on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be leveraged to deepen intercultural understanding between Arab and European youth.
Representing the Youth Peace Initiative (YPI), I had the unique opportunity to participate in this gathering of over 70 youth delegates from across the Arab and European regions. This conference, with its theme of intercultural dialogue in the era of AI, was set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Egypt’s ancient heritage—a setting that both grounded our discussions in history and fuelled our aspirations for the future.
From day one, it was clear that this event would be unlike any other I’d attended. The energy among the participants was electric as we engaged in discussions that connected our diverse perspectives on youth empowerment and cultural exchange. Guided by YPI’s values, I contributed to plenary sessions and took part in dynamic, action-oriented workshops, aiming to promote YPI’s mission while building bridges with other youth-led organisations.
Our sessions tackled a range of topics essential to young people on both sides of the Mediterranean: youth participation and volunteerism, environmental protection in the context of the climate crisis, and how mutual perceptions shape stereotypes. As the focus shifted to AI, workshops on media literacy and combating misinformation, preparing the youth workforce for AI-driven job markets, and using AI to empower education took centre stage. Each workshop prompted thought-provoking discussions, pushing us to think critically about AI’s impact on our futures and how we could harness it for intercultural harmony and sustainable development.
The Forum’s goal—to foster mutual understanding and support youth engagement in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals—was achieved not only through formal discussions but also through informal exchanges. Lunches, dinners, and a vibrant cultural program allowed us to connect personally, as we explored one another’s cultural backgrounds and shared experiences. These moments felt like true bridges across cultures, bringing us closer as a group and as individuals.
Adding to the magic of the event was the unforgettable experience of exploring Luxor’s historical landmarks. We were amazed by the grandeur of the Luxor Temple, witnessed the light show at Karnak Temple, sailed the Nile at sunset, and stood in awe before the tombs of Rameses III, VII, IX, and Tutankhamun in the Valley of the Kings. Each site amplified the sense of history and tradition we were steeped in, reminding us of the interconnectedness of past, present, and future.
One of the Forum’s defining outcomes was the drafting of the Luxor Declaration on Youth and Intercultural Dialogue in the Age of AI, a document shaped collectively by all participants. The Declaration captures the spirit of our discussions, underscoring our commitment to ethical AI, intercultural understanding, and addressing global challenges. Its opening statement reads:
“Constituting more than half of the population of the Arab and European regions, youth are vital to shaping the future. We affirm our role in advancing ethical AI, bridging cultural divides, and addressing key global issues. Through collaboration and inclusive dialogue, we aim to ensure that AI fosters shared progress, empowers youth, and contributes to a more just and peaceful world.”
As I reflect on this experience, I am inspired by the commitment and vision of my peers. The 8th Arab-European Youth Forum underscored that our generation has the power to harness AI not just as a technological tool, but as a bridge to deeper understanding and peace. Together, we’ve laid the groundwork for a shared journey that will continue well beyond Luxor, fueled by our shared vision of an inclusive, connected, and hopeful future.
